Muzak Is A Management Strategy
Muzak helps today's corporation create brand value through audio architecture. When objects are compared at a commodity level - based on scarcity or on the level of manufactured 'goods' - difference is directly proportional to value. However, when the value we assign to objects is based on the experience of them, we escape the restrictions of objecthood or form and begin to base value on how the object is managed and applied. Muzak helps companies move to the latter condition by creating an undifferentiated audio space in which objects are staged. A horizontal field without individuality or climax is an abstract field upon which objects are of even marginal difference appear to be vastly different choices. This works equally well with any type of object, from tissues and candy, to artworks and employees.
