Like Guild House, One Wilshire is a decorated shed. Lettering on the façade announces its name to the city and antennas thickly populate its roof. Although the antennas originally had a purpose, they now are virtually superfluous, increasingly symbolic of the rapid obsolescence of modern technology. The signage is false. The building's real address is 624 S. Grand.
Where Guild House was a home for the elderly, One Wilshire is now the home in which we dwell telematically. As you read this, you read it through One Wilshire. Just as old people watched television in Guild House as a way of checking out of the weariness of life, we check into the global space of telecommunications in order to become more fully alive. In both cases, however, the desire is to leave behind this world of material objects for a purer one.
